Overview

The Business Development Executive provides strategic insights and tactical execution of initiatives, projects, programs, activities, and processes that support the business development and marketing strategies for the firm’s Transactions Practice Group in Northern California. This is a highly visible, hands-on, and results-oriented position, involving close collaboration with lawyers in pursuing revenue generating opportunities, deepening client relationships, and building profiles. This individual will work closely with the Associate Director of Business Development & Marketing for the Business Law Department (BLAW) to stay versed on emerging legal practices and market trends to provide attorneys with an understanding of the competitive landscape and help position the firm for increased revenue and profile raising opportunities. Candidates should be navigating all cycles of growth in Silicon Valley, from early stage emerging growth businesses, venture capital and private equity investors, as well as in-house counsel in “bigtech” corporations (who primarily look for merger and acquisition, transactional, public reporting, executive compensation and governance advice), as well as the technology and life sciences sectors, proficient in both ideation and execution of strategies and initiatives, can prioritize when working across multiple projects, and are driven to align firm capabilities with client needs to help attorneys proactively engage with clients and win work.

Responsibilities

Business Development and Strategy

  • Knowledge of the venture capital and private equity ecosystem and investing trends as well as the technology and life sciences sectors
  • Knowledge of the in-house counsel space in larger public companies, who generally look for M&A, capital markets, public reporting, executive compensation and governance advice
  • Work with department and practice group leaders, partners, and Business Development & Marketing leadership to develop and execute on specific marketing goals, initiatives, and strategies to support business development
  • Work with attorneys to develop and execute their individualized business plans to identify cross-selling opportunities, expand client relationships, and generate revenue
  • Track and provide regular updates on budget spend for the Northern California Transactions Practice Group
  • Develop customized pitches/RFPs, presentations, and marketing materials
  • Read industry, legal, and business publications to remain aware of trends that may impact the practice groups and to identify business development and promotional opportunities
  • Leverage existing, and develop new, referral networks to create new business opportunities
  • Recommend, direct, and support traditional marketing activities that position the practice group and firm to win work from desired clients
  • Be the face of Foley at key firm and regional events cultivating contacts for business development
  • Provide discipline and structure to advance projects and plans to desired outcomes
  • Incorporate return on investment (ROI) mentality in all business development activities and expenditures; evaluate investments and make recommendations with respect to new and existing programs
  • Understand and support the pitch process, including competitive intelligence and research, to ensure strong intra-practice and industry group communication and client service opportunities
  • Leverage Foley’s marketing technology to identify potential leads and track and manage opportunities and pursuits
  • Maintain the integrity of the firm’s experience database, working with the PR, Digital, and CRM teams and attorneys to collect experience, regularly update marketing collateral, update attorney bios, and raise the firm’s profile

Marketing, Profile Raising and Communications

  • Conceptualize sophisticated services and communicate their benefit effectively and simply to clients in writing and orally
  • Create and regularly update pitch materials, brochures, practice group descriptions, website content, deal and experience lists, and other marketing collateral, with a focus on value and client benefit
  • Draft and submit rankings and directories, including Chambers & Partners
  • Utilize the firm's CRM database (Microsoft Dynamics) to create and send external mailings, run reports, and access data for business development purposes
  • Work with the communications and PR team to secure speaking engagements
  • Identify and build strategic relationships with high-profile market-moving organizations
  • Evaluate, track, and monitor all memberships, directories, and sponsorships to ensure ROI
  • Produce and manage seminars, receptions, webinars and other marketing-oriented events and activities
  • Evaluate sponsorships and opportunities to participate in various directories, and manage those we engage in to ensure the firm receives the maximum return on its investment

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Business Administration or related field required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in business development, marketing, client management, or direct sales experience required. 
  • Legal and/or professional services experience, as well as a solid understanding of corporate transactions, strongly preferred.

Foley offers a comprehensive benefit program which currently includes Paid Time Off; Paid Holidays; Medical, Dental and Vision insurance; 401(k) Retirement; Disability and Life insurance; Adoption Assistance; Backup Care for Dependents.  Pursuant to the CA Pay Transparency for Pay Equity Act, the expected salary range for this San Francisco or Silicon Valley based position is between $126,000 - $205,600.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience and other job-related factors
